ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
There Is No Place investigates the home as a metaphor for a person's internal space—the place where secrets are kept and where identity lives. There Is No Place features sculptures made of ceramics, found objects, and photographs by Cody Hilleboe and R.C. Tibbott. Their work offers an introspective investigation into their understanding of their formative years.
R.C. Tibbott mines heavily from the artifacts from his time in service in order to find new ways these artifacts can mold and shape clay. What textures and surfaces they produce when in contact with the malleable material. Tibbott elevates intact artifacts for artistic consideration while others are taken apart at the seams in an attempt to understand what is beneath their surface.
Cody Hilleboe's non-objective sculptural work and photographs are a nod to desolation, isolation, and refusal; his work responds to heroin addiction and the consequences it has had on his life. Cody's photographs serve as a tool to remember situations and ideas after he suffered severe anoxic encephalopathy (lack of oxygen to the brain, brain damage) by way of a drug overdose. He creates his sculptures from pure impulse and movement. In this way, his mixed-media sculptures act as a form of release and represent his body as a sober person who's constantly in growth.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Cody Hilleboe is an artist with practices in sculptural ceramics and photography. His works are often desolate and bleak and serve as a reference to addiction and mental health. His sculptures often interact with photographs and found objects. Cody grew up in Missoula, MT. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montana. He maintained his practice through residencies in Virginia and New Mexico before continuing his formal education at the University of Minnesota to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (2022). Cody has shown work throughout the United States, British Columbia, Canada, and Hedmark, Norway. His sculptural works are in the collections of The Montana Museum of Art and Culture, Taos Ceramics Center, and Cub Creek Foundation. Cody will be graduating, with a Masters of Fine Arts degree, from the University of Minnesota in the spring of 2022
R.C. Tibbott: I was born and raised in Iowa, where my interest in art took root, specifically in photography and ceramics. I spent my early adulthood in the Army as a Paratrooper, as a photojournalist at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier – where I received awards from the Associated Press and the newspaper's parent company – and as a police officer in South Carolina. I returned to clay at the University of Iowa, where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics. I went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota in 2021. My creative interests also lay in poetry and the use of electronics to activate ceramic sculptures.
