Wednesdays, Nov. 7 & 14, 6-8pm
Registration Deadline: Nov. 3
Teens 14+ and adults
Learn a variety of practical methods for binding editions or multiples of zines, chapbooks, artist's books, and beyond, using equipment at the ICPC as well as techniques that can be done at home. While creating a set of sample books including perfect binding, saddle-stitch, wire binding, and sewn pamphlets, we will discuss the advantages and challenges of each method. Participants will be encouraged to engage and experiment with different materials to create unique and well-made books without delving deep into bookbinding craft (yet!).
Optional starter session: Tues. Sept. 25 at Iowa City Public Library’s Digital Media Lab: DIY layout and printing for zines & pamphlets.
Instructor: Kalmia Strong is a bookmaker, printer, and arts organizer. An alumna of the University of Iowa Center for the Book, she is program director at PS1, creative coordinator at the UI Libraries, and resident bookbinder for the Paper Nest. She regularly teaches book & print workshops for children and adults and instigates collaborative projects.
