Stay in our Artist Apartment at ps1 close

The PS1 artist apartment is located on the third floor of the historic Close mansion near downtown Iowa City at 538 S. Gilbert Street. The Close House was built in 1874 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The first two floors of the building house Public Space One, a nonprofit arts organization and community event space. The apartment doesn't have a separate exterior entrance so to get to its door you'll climb two flights of stairs and pass by dynamic spaces including artist studios, the LGBTQ Iowa Library & Archives, PS1’s Media Arts Co-op and Center for Afrofuturist Studies, and a rotating assortment of community events from art exhibitions to dance classes. There are regular public events on the first and second floor.

Once you're in the cozy but spacious apartment, it's completely private, with wood floors, some exposed brick walls, eclectic art and furniture, and a bit of funkiness you'd expect from a 150-year-old house. There is one queen bed and a futon, a small but complete kitchen, a clawfoot tub with shower, and ample space to relax or work.
