Open Call: DIY Publishing Residency at PS1
Artists with DIY publishing as part of their creative practice are invited to submit a proposal for a 2-3 week residency at Public Space One in spring 2024. This residency is intended to activate community around PS1’s new DIY publication studio and support an artist who would benefit from dedicated time and space toward one or more creative projects.
During the residency the artist will have 24/7 access to PS1’s studios and resources. The majority of their time will be free for work/research/exploration/rest, aside from two public programs:
show and tell/demo at our monthly DIY publication lab (1-2 hours)
public engagement of the artists’ choosing (eg. artists’ talk, performance, technical workshop, participatory activity, office hours, etc.)
The residency includes a $1500 stipend, $200 supply budget, and up to $500 in reimbursed travel expenses. Artists are asked to donate one copy of any editioned work produced during the residency to PS1.
PS1 will provide housing in the Close House artist apartment, approximately 1 mile from the IC Press Co-op main studio and DIY publication studio. (The artist apartment is a 3rd-floor walkup; accessible housing is available upon request. Studio spaces are fully accessible.)
Exact dates of the residency will be collaboratively arranged, but must occur within the months of February-April 2024.
Support for this opportunity is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Iowa Arts Council, which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

FAQ
Can I apply with a collaborator?
We are open to applications from 2 people, but please note that accommodations are shared and that the stipend, supply budget, and travel reimbursement are set.
If you are applying as a collaborative team, please submit two separate applications but note in the name field YOUR NAME [applying with COLLABORATOR NAME].
What equipment is available in the studio?
This residency is based around the IC Press Co-op’s new satellite DIY publishing studio, which includes a copier, color laser printer, RISO SF5130 (blue, yellow, black, and fluorescent pink drums), and equipment for staple, coil, and twin-loop binding, but artists are also welcome and encouraged to use the main ICPC studio and other resources offered at PS1 (see below). You can find the full list of ICPC studio equipment here.
What dates are available?
The residency can be scheduled anytime between February 1 and April 14 and can last 14-21 days. Our annual comics and zine festival, ICE CREAM, is April 6, if you’d like to be here for that!
