Phosphoresce in sympathy

The Christine Burke Ensemble (Justin Comer, Gabi Vanek, Ramin Roshandel, Laura Canelo Cohen, Lex Letourneau, and Christine Burke) will perform an hour-long sound installation in the gardens of Public Space One. Heard or seen external stimuli (cars passing, wind, sirens, a person or entering the performance space, the sound of crickets or cicadas, etc.) will trigger the performance of both pre-determined and improvised sound material. The goal of the piece is to inconspicuously enhance, coexist and engage with a soundscape and participate in its organic events/process(es); to draw material from the immediate environmental happenings and glow alongside them. Come and listen for part of the hour, the whole hour, or walk by a few times!

This performance is supported by an Iowa Arts & Culture Resilience Grant from the Iowa Arts Council.

About the performers:

The ensemble performing Phosphoresce in sympathy is an ever-changing group of area musicians (performers, composers and improvisers) who are interested in performing open and improvisatory works. We have been both "The Christine Burke Ensemble" as well as "The Justin Comer Ensemble" - the name of the ensemble is entirely dependent on whose work is being rehearsed/performed at that given time.

About the composer:

Christine is a composer from Iowa City, IA, whose music has recently been performed by line upon line percussion, the Walden School Creative Musicians, the Ambassador Trio, and bassist Will Yager. Past collaborations include projects with Wolftone, Dog Star Orchestra, Density512, ETHEL, Southland Ensemble, a.pe.ri.od.ic, Alarm Will Sound, the Chicago Civic Orchestra Fellows, JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Heavy Air, The Living Earth Show, NOW Ensemble, Kamratōn Ensemble, and participation in the Earle Brown Music Foundation’s International Summer Academy.
