Bea Drysdale

As a sculptor I work intuitively making abstract work with tissue paper. I aim not to force the paper but to gently coax it into shape aided by minimal gluing and stitching. The final outcome is often decided by the architecture of the space the work exists in and the action of gravity, pushing the pieces further each time.

I earned an MFA in 3D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003 and a BA in English and Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1986. Early in my career I was awarded a Pollock-Krasner grant and artist residencies at Sculpture Space, New York state, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Colorado.  Since moving to Iowa City in 2012 my practice has expanded to include artist’s books, performance, and representational drawing and painting.
