Jeremy Chen
Jeremy Chen is an artist and educator from Iowa City. He holds an MFA in Printmaking with a Sculpture concentration from the University of Iowa as well as a Book Arts Certificate from the UI Center for the Book. He currently teaches print media, sculpture, and drawing at Grinnell College where he is an Associate Professor of Art and past chair of American Studies. Chen’s work is often site responsive and improvisational. Improvisation is attractive because it forces and enhances diverse paths that are unfixed. Improvisation affords experimentation, possibility, contingency, uncertainty, and potency, even if it risks epic failure and embarrassment. He envies the savvy of tricksters and jesters with their mysterious and unpredictable routes to making and/or breaking meaning as he attempts to make sense and break sense as an artist working across media.
