Free Shipping Public Space One in progress
Artist duo Alejandras Salinas & Aeron Bergman present a new iteration of their ongoing Free Shipping installation of cardboard box ink paintings made on-site to fit the architecture of different spaces. The cardboard boxes are from daily shipping and commerce, in this case the artists asked PS1 to recycle cardboard boxes which are now installed on the floor of the historic PS1 Close house. The painting is done collaboratively with their daughter Agnes Bergman-Salinas, and with the PS1 community during their residency. The materials are symbolic of the world market: the Cardboard Box Index is used by investors to gauge consumer consumption futures. Ink is a symbol of the carbon cycle: black ink is made from soot, that is, carbon, by burning organic material.
Aeron Bergman and Alejandra Salinas are an artist duo. Their work has circulated in different forms for 25 years. They have lived in Toronto, New York, London, Logroño, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Oslo, Seattle, Portland, Detroit, and currently live in Columbia, Missouri. Bergman & Salinas co-founded Lucky Kitchen in New York 1998 (with partner Daniel Raffel); co-founded and directed the artist-run-space Institute for New Connotative Action 2011–2022; and INCA Press in 2015.
Bergman & Salinas are artists, book publishers, educators, and facilitators of dialogue, having held full-time faculty positions at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, the University of Washington, and the University of Missouri. The work is interdisciplinary, manifesting as site-based sound recordings, text publications, public artworks, paintings, site-specific installations, reading rooms, seed libraries, and community events. For over two decades, they have steadily produced this research-based work, exhibiting at the 4th Athens Biennale; the 1st Bergen Assembly Triennial; Serralves Museum, Porto; Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna; Nikolai Kunsthal, Copenhagen; Palais de Tokyo; Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Luminary, St. Louis; Artspace New Haven; and Artpace San Antonio; among others.
