Cloud House at PS1 Close House (538 S. Gilbert)
sliding scale: $20-$1150
Participants will learn the history and context of techno in Detroit and across the globe, where discarded hardware proved to be staple in creating the elements of techno, and how it has evolved to what we know today. Primordial elements of techno production; such as synthesis, use of drum machines, rhythmic patterns, sampling, groove, track arrangement, structure, and mixing will be thoroughly explained using Ableton Live as a canvas. By the end of the workshop, the participants will have a finished a track of their own production and built a small library of personal sounds to help them continue their production journey.
Participants need to provide their own laptop with a free 30-day trial of Ableton Live downloaded.
Registration deadline: Feb. 1
*PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Hills Bank and individual donors. $122 is the true cost of the workshop, and we encourage participants to select the cost that they can afford, or pay a little extra to support future sliding-scale fees.
TEACHING ARTISTS:
Julian and Andres, aka Pronoia and moreit respectively, have been DJing since their teenage years, yet started to host their own party series Puddle less than a year ago. Pronoia focuses on sounds from the Midwest, proper techno from those who care. While moreit focuses on rhythms from Latin America, calling back to his roots. Both accumulate performances in various stages all over the Midwest and beyond, and will share their knowledge for those who are trying to learn and/or hone their skills in DJing.
