The Collective, whose origins begin at The University of Iowa in the fall of 2017, is a group of five contemporary ceramic fueled artists. This group has created a community through their passion for artistic expression and their connection with clay. Working in clay as a base material to explain the world around us and how we exist as human beings. However, each member's art practices also incorporate different materials like painting, printmaking, and installation. The Collective work in a communal studio space, vibing off each other’s style, expertise, musical choices, and diverse life experiences. This exhibition will explore the uniqueness of each artist and what we have learned from one another. Being together we have found commonalities in themes that address alienation, “otherness,” science-fiction, mental illness, racism, and societal interaction. The Collective’s goal is to create an exhibition which is thought provoking and brings reflection and self-analysis from the viewer.
