on the West Lawn of the Pentacrest (facing the Iowa River)

A participatory public art project in the form of a card stunt spelling out SHOW UP, bookended by absurd festivity including a recreation of Jimi Hendrix's Star-Spangled Banner by an amateur musician and the hoisting of an enormous pom-pom.

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 2.08.10 PM.png

Each card in the card stunt will be a special edition civic-engagement-themed screenprint designed by local artist Mrs Carla Bryant (and including a link to a voter registration website) which all participants can keep to share or distribute, encouraging others to show up.

Join us to embody and visualize civic engagement and help distribute 1000 "get out the vote" posters!

We can't spell SHOW UP without YOU! Let us know you'll be there: RSVP here!

The SPECTACULAR is open to all, no matter their political ideations or artistic inclinations, and will last no longer than an hour.

This event is part of the FOR FREEDOMS 50-STATE INITIATIVE

A nationwide effort led by For Freedoms, a platform using art as a vehicle to build greater participation in American Democracy, the 50-State Initiative is a network of artists and art institutions producing programming to inject nuanced, artistic thinking into public discourse during the lead-up to the midterm elections. The project is designed to model how arts institutions can become civic forums for action and discussion of values, place, and patriotism.
