Hannah Givler
Iowa Art Field 2025
Hannah Givler grew up in an unfinished, 1930’s Sears kit home. The rawness of the house’s interior, the exposed framing, subflooring, and drywall, were all on display, and the ongoing physical and emotional work shared by family within this space fostered a deep respect for process and learning through making.
Hannah’s creative research focuses on vernacular architecture, natural building, and sustainable woodworking and upcycling practices informed by a material studies lens. In her collaborative installation with Nicholas Cladis for Iowa Art Field, Givler is exploring the phenomenological elements of one particular dogtrot style log house City Park Cabin including the light and volume of the interior, while also considering relationships across dominant historical narratives of the log cabin in the Midwestern United States and Iowa City.
