Oaxacan Embroidery Sampler: Embracing Our Worldview
With Xitlalic López, Guest Artist from Oaxaca, Mexico
Saturday, September 26, 1:30-4:30p
$90, Supplies Included
Three communities, three symbols, three stitches, and a story to tell. With Xitlalic Lopez, a textile artist and owner of Milagros Café Creativo in Oaxaca, Mexico, we'll explore Oaxacan embroidery from a perspective that goes beyond technique. You'll learn three traditional stitches, applied to symbols from three communities in Oaxaca, while discovering part of the indigenous worldview that lives within their textiles. You’ll leave with your own Oaxacan sampler, a small piece to preserve your stitches and the meanings behind them. No prior experience necessary. All materials are included.
Xitlalic has taught throughout Mexico, Finland, and Denmark and is coming to Iowa City after being invited to teach at the Denver Botanic Garden. This is a very special opportunity to learn traditional Oaxacan embroidery techniques without leaving Iowa City. Don’t miss it!
