Stop-Motion Animation (January 2026)
Stop-Motion Animation (January 2026)
with Jarrod DeRooi
Saturday January 31, 10a-3p
PS1 Close House
sliding scale: $30-$100
Welcome to the world of Stop-Motion Animation! For over 100 years, stop-motion has been used to make movies. From Nightmare Before Christmas to Wallace and Gromit to Fantastic Mr. Fox, stop-motion has been the mode for telling some of our most iconic animated stories — and though CGI (and even AI) have certainly changed how animation is used, stop-motion has shown immense staying power within the filmmaking process.
During this workshop, participants will work in pairs to create a handful of short animated projects, using everyday objects, art supplies, toys and, of course, clay. Participants will learn the basics of stop-motion in the first half of the session, and during the second half of the session, will work on a longer, more involved project.
The animations will be recorded using iPads and app-based software (provided), and the animations created will be shared digitally, after the session. The app participants will use is called “Stop Motion Studio”. The app is free to use and participants may find value in downloading it at home ahead of time. “Stop Motion Studio” is compatible with most computers and handheld devices.
Participants need only bring a sense of imagination, comfortable attire, and a little dose of patience.
We hope you will join us!
Open to ages 18+.
Registration deadline: January 23
*PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Hills Bank and individual donors. $75 is the true cost of the workshop, and we encourage participants to select the cost that they can afford, or pay a little extra to support future sliding-scale fees.
